The Spirit of Giving

I have always loved the holidays!   It’s the time of year for reflection, giving thanks, and being of service to others.  For us in recovery, we strive to practice these principals in all our affairs throughout the entire year.

At Western Roundup Living Sober, service to others is at the heart of all we do whether it’s providing fun sober experiences through our monthly fundraisers, our focus on the newcomer, and of course our Annual Conference!

This month, we held our first ever Jingle Mingle – A Holiday Get-together!  It was a great event that had a little of something for everyone.  It was heartwarming to see our fellowship near and far gather to celebrate the holidays, our sobriety, and each other.  Santa and his elves made a visit for some photos, and Menorah Manischevitz led a spirited dreidel competition.  The night was capped off with a festive performance from members of our Musical Committee.  Thank you to everyone that joined us!  We hope you had as much fun as we did.  Not far from us, another celebration was happening from our fellows at the A New Beginning meeting’s holiday party.  They decided to take in donations for Western Roundup Living Sober at their party, and surprised us by delivering it at the end of our event.  It was an unexpected gift, and we are very grateful for their generosity and thoughtfulness.

We also found generosity from our friends at the Castro Country Club after our venue for our New Year’s Eve party backed out on us last minute.  We scrambled to find a new home for our celebration, but fell short.  The Castro Country Club stepped in to offer their cafe and clubhouse, which we enthusiastically accepted.  We hope you’ll join us on New Years Eve for our Masquerade Party and countdown to 2020.   We learned from our Jingle Mingle that people really enjoyed and valued the opportunity to be in a casual environment where they can catch up with old friends, meet new ones, and choose from our different options how they wanted to enjoy the party.  We’re taking this same approach to New Year’s Eve.  We’ll have a space for music and dancing, an area for games, refreshments, social space and we’ll all gather at midnight to ring in the New Year!

We are looking forward to being of service to you in 2020!  There are still lots of opportunities for you to be involved whether its joining one of our open positions on our General Planning Committee, volunteering at one (or more) of our events, or simply by attending our events.  The money we raise at our fundraisers help cover the cost of producing the event, and the surplus go towards our Annual Conference.  This year, we’ve also established our Co-Sponsored Donation Fund, which ensures that no one is turned away for lack of funds at any of our events.  Any amount donated to that fund is greatly appreciated, and helps provide these experiences to everyone.

From our family at Western Roundup Living Sober to yours, we wish you a safe, sober, and joyous holiday – and we can’t wait to celebrate the new year!
